In the indian
(brahmanical and Buddhist) doctrine the 2 selves mortal and immortal
dwell together in us. In all these literature, the nature and
character of the 2 selves are dealt with at length and the important
of the resolution of these inner conflict emphasized.

No man is at peace until it is resolved which of the selves shall
rule. In this philosophy we are unfree to the extent that we are
determined to a large extent by the desires of the outer man but we
are free to the extent that the outer man learns to act not for
himself but on behalf of the inner man, our real self.
