Janaka: How can knowledge be acquired? How can liberation be
attained? How is Renunciation possible?
Astvakra:
Freedom comes from Renunciation and the ability to
renounce comes from knowledge. What
is this knowledge-
Knowledge that we are not the earth, the water, nor fire, nor air,
nor space, we are the self which is the witness of all of these.
This knowledge comes to you when you seek forgiveness, are sincere,
and are every moment of the day in an attitude of surrender, where
the ego is not and you drop all ideas of being the doer of all
actions. You become the seer instead. A natural Detachment,
Renunciation follows. And with it a feeling of liberation and peace.
You will then experience the Bliss that comes from the knowledge
that self is all pervading, all seeing and is distinct from your
body and mind. And you are that self itself. A witness.
As you detach yourself from your body and mind so you detach
yourself from its physical and emotional and thought manifestations.
Renouncing ourselves from the external and the internal
manifestations that we see, feel, and think, the Self is free. You
pervade this universe and this universe exists in you.
Unconditioned, formless, immutable undisturbed you are
consciousness alone, a perennial. Just as the same space is inside
and outside a Jar and on breaking the Jar space becomes one, so
break the barrier imposed by your small self and realise that the
all pervasive Brahman (Self, Atman) exists in all things.
