In
its essence, the natural way of living has at its core the principle
of sacred relationships. Everything in the Universe is inter related
and divine. The sacred exists in the love one human being has for
another, a parent for a child, in the respect shown to earth in the
reverence a farmer has towards his field, in the saints surrender to
his God.
no place on earth does this permeate so deeply in everyday life as it
does in India and continues to survive at the end of the 20th century,
as an innate intention that life's meaning and significance lies
somewhere beyond the senses and the rational mind.
Till today - India remains the land of saints and sages;
containing a multiplicity of sacred sites and the land in which
several religions have flowered and developed distinct expressions.
Look
out of your window, most likely a few yards from you there is a temple
or a Gurdwara, a Church, a Masjid or simply a tree that is worshipped,
a man who sits in prayer; walkout and look around at the sacred spaces
you encounter every few steps that you take. India is a sacred land.
The four sacred abodes at the 4 Cardinal points of North, South, East,
and West.
The seven sacred cities, the seven sacred rivers, the
seven sacred mountains. Then each village, tribal hamlet the
gods and goddesses, the rivulets and streams that are worshipped, more
so there are even deities of Cholera, Small-pox and Plague. The
classical and the local traditions together form a vast and intricate
pattern of sacred movement sites which cover all of India.
The sacrality of the land of India is what till today gives a sense
of unity to this country, of so many religions, cultures, races and
factions.
